Immediately I saw Kamaruzzaman, with a short beard on his chin, coming forward with two other boys with a wooden hammer in his hand.

 Coming in front of the gate of the college, he shouted, "Who gave the slogan of freedom last night? Come out if you have the courage."

 According to Kamaruzzaman, no one came in front of the gate.

 Shortly afterwards, four boys grabbed a boy from a private dormitory and brought him to the field.

 Kamaruzzaman shook the hammer up and down and went in front of the boy and said, "Did you chant the slogan of freedom last night?"

 The boy swelled his chest and said, "Yes, I gave the slogan."

 As soon as this was over, Kamaruzzaman hit the boy in the arm with a wooden hammer. The boy endured the first blow, but could not bear the next blow, shouting, "Oh, Dad , oh, ma'am."

 Seeing this scene, the political science boy said, "Kamaruzzaman is called a blacksmith because he hit people with a hammer."

 Kamaruzzaman then threatened, "Will you ever chant the slogan for freedom again?"

 The boy then cried and said, "Brother, I will never speak for freedom again. Leave me alone, I will go home."

 Kamaruzzaman then said to all present, "If anyone gives a slogan for freedom, I will seize him at Jubilee Ghat and shoot him like a dog." Saying this, Kamaruzzaman left with his companions. And the boy who was hit by the hammer went to the dormitory, crying and massaging in the places of pain.

The boy of political science said, "Well, that this boy said that he will not slogan for independence. Is it a supporter of Kamaruzzaman?"

Jamal: - Never. He said that because he could not bear pain.

 The boy of history said to Jamal, "You are recruiting people for the liberation war, but in front of you a boy is being hammered by the supporters of Pakistan for chanting slogans for independence but you have done nothing."

 Jamal said, "This is a tactic. Now if I did anything, they would catch me. As a result, my mission to recruit people would fail. Well, where is Kamaruzzaman's house? In which year is he studying?"

 The political science boy said, "His home is in Sherpur subdivision, he is studying in fourth year."

 Jamal: - His home is in Sherpur, but how can he be so powerful in Mymensingh? What is the source of his power?

 The boy of political science: - The Biharis of Mymensingh are the source of his power. He is so powerful through Biharis.

 Jamal :- Where did the Biharis come from in Mymensingh?

 The boy of political science: - After the partition of the country in 1947, many people from Bihar moved to East Pakistan. Now they identify themselves as completely Pakistani. However, Kamaruzzaman is politically a follower of Maulana Maududi and Golam Azam.

 Boy of History: - Maulana Maududi has established an ideology which gives a new interpretation of Islam and spreads a lot of confusion. And Golam Azam was involved in the language movement in 1952, i.e. language soldier. But now it has sided with Pakistan.

 Jamal: - Everything is benefit. In 1952, Golam Azam was younger. So Urdu was less understood. So the Bengali language was his recourse. As a result, he started a language movement. But now he is old enough to understand Urdu, even translating Maulana Maududi's book from Urdu to Bengali. So now it has sided with Pakistan to get more benefits politically. Basically, Golam Azam and his men are almost certain that the Pak army will win this war.

 I: - Well, why is the USA supporting Pakistan?

 Jamal: - The world is now divided into two ideologies. Democratic politics led by the USA and socialist politics led by the Soviet Union. The USA is supporting Pakistan because the Soviet Union supported India and Bangladesh. Otherwise, the USA would never have supported an extremist country like Pakistan.

পরক্ষণেই দেখলাম থুতনিতে অল্প দাড়িওয়ালা কামারুজ্জামান হাতে কাঠ দিয়ে তৈরি একটা হাতুড়ি নিয়ে আরো দুটো ছেলের সঙ্গে এগিয়ে আসছে।

কলেজের গেটের সামনে এসে সে চিৎকার করে বলল, "কারা কারা গতরাতে স্বাধীনতার স্লোগান দিয়েছিলি ? সাহস থাকলে বেরিয়ে আয়। " 

কামারুজ্জামানের কথায় কেউই গেটের সামনে এল না। 

একটু পরে চারটা ছেলে প্রাইভেট ছাত্রাবাস থেকে একটা ছেলেকে ধরে মাঠে নিয়ে এল। 

কামারুজ্জামান হাতুড়িটা উপর - নীচে অল্প অল্প ঝাকাতে ঝাকাতে ছেলেটার সামনে গিয়ে বলল, " গতরাতে তুই স্বাধীনতার পক্ষে স্লোগান দিয়েছিলি ? " 

ছেলেটা বুক ফুলিয়ে বলল, " হ্যাঁ, আমিই শ্লোগান দিয়েছিলাম। " 

এই কথা শেষ হওয়া মাত্রই ছেলেটার বাহুতে কামারুজ্জামান কাঠের হাতুড়িটা দিয়ে সজোরে আঘাত করল। প্রথম আঘাতটায় ছেলেটা সহ্য করলেও পরের আঘাতগুলো সহ্য করতে না পেরে, " ও বাবাগো, ও মাগো " বলে চিৎকার করতে লাগলো। 

এই দৃশ্য দেখে রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞানের ছেলেটা বলল, " কামারুজ্জামানে হাতুড়ি দিয়ে মানুষকে আঘাত করার কারণেই তাকে কামার বলা হয়। " 

কামারুজ্জামান তখন ধমক দিয়ে বলল, " আর কখনো স্বাধীনতার পক্ষে স্লোগান দিবি ? " 

ছেলেটা তখন কাঁদতে কাঁদতে বলল, " ভাই, আর কখনো স্বাধীনতার পক্ষে কথা বলব না। আমাকে ছেড়ে দেন, আমি বাড়ি চলে যাই। " 

কামারুজ্জামান তখন উপস্থিত সকলকে বলল, " কেউ যদি স্বাধীনতার পক্ষে স্লোগান দিবি, তাহলে জুবিলিঘাটে ধরে নিয়ে কুত্তার মত গুলি করে মারব। " এই কথা বলে কামারুজ্জামান নিজের সাথীদেরকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে চলে গেল। আর হাতুড়ি দ্বারা আঘাতপ্রাপ্ত ছেলেটা ব্যথার স্থানগুলোতে ডলতে ডলতে আর কাঁদতে কাঁদতে ছাত্রাবাসে চলে গেল।

জামালকে ইতিহাসের ছেলেটা বলল, " আপনি মুক্তিযুদ্ধের জন্য লোক সংগ্রহ করছেন, অথচ আপনার সামনে পাকিস্তানের সমর্থক দ্বারা স্বাধীনতার পক্ষে স্লোগান দেয়ার কারণে হাতুড়ি পেটা করা হল অথচ আপনি কিছুই করলেননা কেন ? "

জামাল বলল, " এটা হচ্ছে রণকৌশল। এখন যদি আমি কিছু করতাম, তাহলে আমাকে ওরা ধরত। ফলে লোক সংগ্রহের জন্য আমার মিশন ব্যর্থ হত। আচ্ছা, কামারুজ্জামানের বাড়ি কোথায় ? কোন ইয়ারে পড়ে ? "

রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞানের ছেলেটা বলল, " ওর বাড়ি শেরপুর মহকুমায়, পড়ে ফোর্থ ইয়ারে। "

জামাল :- ওর বাড়ি শেরপুরে, অথচ ময়মনসিংহে ওর এত দাপট কীভাবে ? ওক শক্তির উৎস কী ?

রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞানের ছেলেটা :- ময়মনসিংহের বিহারিরা হচ্ছে ওর শক্তির উৎস। বিহারিদের মাধ্যমেই ওর এত দাপট।

জামাল :- ময়মনসিংহে বিহারিরা এল কোথা থেকে ?

রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞানের ছেলেটা :- ১৯৪৭ সালে দেশ বিভাগের পর বিহার থেকে অনেক লোক পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে চলে আসে। এখন ওরা নিজেদেরকে সম্পূর্ণভাবে পাকিস্তানি পরিচয় দেয়। তবে কামারুজ্জামান রাজনৈতিকভাবে মাওলানা মওদুদি ও গোলাম আযমের অনুসারী।

ইতিহাসের ছেলেটা :- মাওলানা মওদুদি এমন এক মতাদর্শ প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছেন, যে মতাদর্শ ইসলাম ধর্মের নতুন ব্যাখ্যা দেয় এবং অনেকাংশে বিভ্রান্তি ছড়ায়। আর গোলাম আযম ১৯৫২ সালে ভাষা আন্দোলনের সঙ্গে জড়িত ছিল, অর্থাৎ ভাষা সৈনিক। অথচ এখন পাকিস্তানের পক্ষ নিয়েছে।

জামাল :- সবই হচ্ছে স্বার্থ। ১৯৫২ সালে গোলাম আযমের বয়স ছিল কম। তাই উর্দু ভাষাও বুঝত কম। তাই বাংলা ভাষাই ছিল ওর অবলম্বন। ফলে সে ভাষা আন্দোলন করেছিল। কিন্তু এখন বয়স হয়েছে উর্দু ভাষা বুঝে, এমনকি মাওলানা মওদুদির বই উর্দু থেকে বাংলায় অনুবাদ করছে। তাই এখন রাজনৈতিকভাবে আরো সুবিধা পেতে পাকিস্তানের পক্ষ নিয়েছে। মূলতঃ গোলাম আযম আর ওর লোকেরা প্রায় নিশ্চিত হয়েই আছে, এই যুদ্ধে পাক বাহিনীই জিতবে।

আমি :- আচ্ছা, পাকিস্তানকে ইউএসএ (মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র) সমর্থন করছে কেন ?

জামাল :- বিশ্ব এখন দুই মতাদর্শে বিভক্ত। ইউএসএর নেতৃত্বে গণতান্ত্রিক রাজনীতি এবং সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের নেতৃত্বে সমাজতান্ত্রিক রাজনীতি। ভারত ও বাংলাদেশকে সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়ন সমর্থন করার কারণে ইউএসএ পাকিস্তানকে সমর্থন করছে। এটা না হলে পাকিস্তানের মত এমন একটা উগ্রপন্থী দেশকে ইউএসএ কখনই সমর্থন করত না।
